A 2K mold produces a single part from two different colors or two different materials in one molding cycle. Instead of molding two separate pieces and assembling them, the Tool moves the first shot into a second cavity and injects the second material directly onto it. A 2K mold is a mold that forms two components in a single machine cycle. The first shot creates one part of the geometry; the mold then indexes, and the second shot overmolds the second color or material onto it. The result is a finished part with no secondary assembly. The tool is also called a two-shot mold, a double-shot mold, or a two-color injection mold — the names describe the same process.
The key difference from a standard mold is the indexing motion. A 2K mold must hold two cavities in perfect alignment across the index, so the first and second shots land in the right position every cycle. Two-shot molding follows a repeating cycle in which the mold moves the first shot into position for the second. A typical sequence runs like this:
The mold closes and injects the first material into the first cavity.
The first shot cools and stays on the core while the mold opens.
The mold indexes — a rotary platen turns, or a slider shifts the core — moving the first shot in front of the second cavity.
The mold closes and injects the second material over the first shot.
The finished two-material part cools and is ejected.
The mold indexes back to its start position for the next cycle.
The index can be driven by a rotating platen, a core-back motion, or an indexing table, depending on the machine and the part. Because the two shots happen in one cycle, two-shot molding removes the assembly step entirely — which is where most of the cost saving comes from.
A 2K mold costs more to build than a single-color mold, so it earns its place when the part gains something from being molded in one cycle. Common reasons include:
Two-color appearance with a clean, molded-in boundary instead of painting or printing
A soft-touch or rubber grip overmolded onto a rigid substrate
Integrated sealing where the second material forms a gasket in place
Elimination of a secondary assembly step, which cuts labor and defect risk
Medical and hygiene parts where assembly joints would trap contamination
The trade-off comes down to two-color mold vs single-color mold cost. A two-color mold costs more up front, but on a high-volume part the saved assembly time and improved quality often outweigh it. On low volumes, two separate parts joined later can be cheaper.

A 2K mold design has to solve problems a single-color mold never faces. These are the points that decide whether the tool runs cleanly:
Index tolerance. The two cavities must repeat to a tight position, or the second shot will be off-register.
Material pairing. The substrate and the overmold must bond chemically or mechanically; incompatible pairs delaminate.
Gate placement. The second shot's gate must fill the overmold area without washing over the first shot.
Shrinkage difference. The two materials shrink at different rates, so the cavity dimensions are compensated separately.
Cooling balance. Both shots must cool evenly in one cycle, or the part warps at the material boundary.
